Article 1. Gyeonggi Orchestra Performs with Aspiring Musicians (0713-3)

The Gyeonggi Arts Center hosted a special concert that featured aspiring amateur musicians so as to provide them with an opportunity to play with an orchestra. It was the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra that donated time to help these young musicians hone their skills.

Our reporter attended a rehearsal of Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto played by the orchestra and talented junior music student Cho Su-min (조수민). Cho has been playing the violin since she was a child and has received numerous awards. However, this was the first time she ever played with a full orchestra. Performing with more than a hundred veteran musicians, she played the piece almost perfectly.

The full-fledged performance event for young music students, entitled ‘Cultural Sharing Concerts’, was organized by the Gyeonggi Arts Center with cooperation from the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra. These aspiring musicians were selected from among those who exhibited greater musical potential. In addition to performing with the orchestra, these young artists were also provided with free mentoring with international s.

This year’s Cultural Sharing Concerts took place in two parts: the first part featured two young musicians last month. The second part held on July 18 at the Gyeonggi Arts Center features a pianist and a cellist.
Article 2. Gyeonggi Libraries Operate Book Reading Cultural Program (0716-2)

To promote book reading and the use of libraries among children, Gyeonggi Province is providing small local libraries with support for a variety of programs that combine book reading with related activities.

Collectively termed the Book Reading Cultural Program, these provincially supported programs range from educational classes to activities related to books that children read.

These programs aim to help children familiarize themselves with books and libraries through entertaining experiences with the contents of books.

While being popular among kindergarten and primary school children, these local libraries also became socializing centers for parents.

Book Reading Cultural Program support is being provided to small libraries selected from among 1,300 such libraries in the province based on an assessment of the programs they design.

Small libraries offer a variety of self-designed, entertaining book reading programs and are becoming popular destinations among local children. These libraries also serve as communication centers for parents regarding the education of their children.
Article 3. Gyeonggi Province Moves to Aid Furniture Industry (0714-2)

The entry of international furniture giant IKEA into the Korean market is having a major effect on the Korean furniture industry, especially on smaller enterprises. Gyeonggi Province called upon larger manufacturers to aid the local industry.

MOU for Cooperation between Small & Large Furniture Industries
Gyeonggi Province secured a cooperation agreement with ten large Korean furniture manufacturers for the survival of the local furniture industry. At the signing ceremony, Governor Nam disclosed related policy.

▶ KRW 4.1 Billion to be Invested
Gyeonggi Province will invest KRW 4.1 billion in projects for both small and large furniture enterprises.

Under this agreement, large furniture manufacturers will transfer production and marketing know-how and share their distribution networks with smaller manufacturers while saving development and labor costs through the utilization of resources made available by smaller manufacturers.

This agreement will help transform the structure of the domestic furniture industry with the improved competitiveness of both small and large manufacturers.
Gyeonggi Province will also organize furniture expos and design contests for the promotion of the existing industry as well as the creation of new businesses and jobs.
Article 4. Gyeonggi Province’s Optical Technology Promotion (0715-3)

Since 2011, Gyeonggi Province has been supporting the development of optical technologies, such as those using LEDs and lasers, with successful results. Our reporter examined the details.

The application areas for optical technology are expanding rapidly.
[CG-Partial] LEDs and lasers are widely used in displays and control equipment; they are part of core technologies used in almost all industrial fields.
Optical technology development requires considerable investment and expertise; this is a great challenge that few smaller enterprises can overcome.

By connecting this company with a university under an optical technology promotion project, Gyeonggi Province helped it save significantly in terms of research and development costs.

▶ Optical Technology Support Project Results in 163 New Jobs
The provincial optical technology promotion project has helped 56 small and medium-sized enterprises to date. The project has realized remarkable success by helping these enterprises achieve increased sales totaling KRW 18.4 billion and the creation of 163 new jobs.
Article 5. Gyeonggi to Host New Curling Rink (0717)

During the Winter Olympics in Sochi last year, Gyeonggi Province’s women’s curling team realized unexpected achievements as a national team. This year, this team made the national curling team again. Unlike last time when the team had to travel to Seoul to practice, they will now have their own curling rink on home ground.

This curling rink in the national sports team training complex in Seoul, in which three teams are now practicing, is one of only two curling rinks in Korea. The provincial curling teams had to use this rink, travelling a considerable distance and paying large fees.

▶ Uijeongbu City Selected for National Curling Rink Construction Support
Recently, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that Uijeongbu (의정부) City of Gyeonggi Province will host a new curling rink. Out of KRW 9 billion required for the construction of an international-grade rink, the ministry will support KRW 5 billion over two years.
While thirteen curling teams in Gyeonggi Province will directly benefit from the new rink, a number of new high school and university teams that have been waiting for a new rink will also be created.

Article 6. Gyeonggi Launches World Population Day Campaign (0715)

July 11 was designated by the United Nations as World Population Day, inspired by the day upon which the global population reached five billion. As a nation with one of the lowest population growth rates, Korea also designated the day as Population Day to encourage childbirth. In Gyeonggi Province, a campaign was launched for the same purpose.

The campaign began at Suwon Station Plaza with music and a dance performance by volunteer students and the music group Flash Mob. The performance was followed by a public quiz.

The campaign began on the fourth Population Day with the aim of promoting public awareness of population issues.

Five years from now is the most important period of time because, after that, the baby boom generation will retire and join dependent, senior generations, leaving shrinking generations thereafter. To prevent a potential population crisis, Gyeonggi Province has been developing and implementing various population policies.
Article 7. Asbestos Roofs Still Pose Threat in Gyeonggi Province (0716)

In Gyeonggi Province, there are still a large number of houses with slated roofs that contain asbestos, posing serious health risks. However, residents are reluctant to replace roofs due to the costs involved. To address this problem, Gyeonggi Province held a meeting with residents.

Slated roofs are easy to remove and can be replaced in only a couple of hours. Government support only covers removal costs, however, so residents must pay for the new roofs themselves.

“Work is being done here to remove a slated roof that contains asbestos, a Class 1 carcinogen. Although work like this is being done for 1,500 houses annually with national support, there are still more than 52,000 houses with slated roofs in the province.”

Asbestos Meeting with Residents
In order to address this problem, related officials from provincial and local administrations met with residents to identify issues and discuss possible solutions. The biggest issue is replacement cost. Gyeonggi Province has been providing replacement cost support since 2013, but only to those in low income brackets.

“This is a difficult problem, but it has to be addressed somehow since it is directly related to residents and the quality of their lives.”
Although most residents living under the slated roofs fall in low income brackets, only four percent of them are actual owners of the residences. The remaining 96 percent have no right to apply for roof removal or replacement support, which is a difficult issue.
