Article 1. Gyeonggi Establishes Provincial Vision for 2040 (0602-2)

Gyeonggi Province organized a team of more than two hundred residents to establish the provincial vision for the year 2040. The first meeting of this team, titled Gyeonggi Vision 2040 Resident Team, was held at the Gyeonggi Human Resource Development Center on May 30. Our reporter was there.

▶ Gyeonggi to Announce Gyeonggi Vision 2040 in October
The detailed Gyeonggi Vision 2040 will be announced in October after the finalization of citizen suggestions through public forums.

Article 2. Gyeonggi Province Hosts National Reunification Expo

In commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of National LiberationJapan, the National Reunification Expo was held in Seoul last month. Among second-tier governments, Gyeonggi Province made some of the greatest contributions to this national event.

The expo featured a variety of items including specialty goodsdelicacies of the north. There was also a symbolic event in which visitors hung pinwheels with messages on a barbed-wire fence to convey wishes for national reunification.

National Reunification Expo
A total of 174 centralprovincial governments as well as public organizations participated in the expo. Gyeonggi Province occupied four large booths that featured a wide variety of itemsinteresting programs. One of the popular programs was ‘Visit to North Korea’ in which visitors are issued a passtake photographs with people dressed as North Koreans.
There was also an exhibition of paintings, photographsother depictions of North Korean paraphernalia, villages,famous historic monuments such as those in the Gaeseong (개성) Historic District, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Many worksartists who lived in the north were brought to the expo courtesy of nationalprovincial museums.
During the expo, Gyeonggi Province also publicized its North-South exchangecooperation projects

With the 70th anniversary of national separation only a few years away, Gyeonggi Province will continue to promote peacecooperation between the two Koreas based on the principle that reunificationsomething that should be prepared for,against.
Article 3. Eco-Friendly Organic Farming Trade Show

On June 2, Organic Farming Day, the fourteenth Eco-friendly Farming Trade Show ended after four days of showcasing a wide array of organic farm productsaround the nation.

A number of viewers gather around a glass chamber containing dozens of bees flying above flowers. They their hands into the chamber, but no one gets stung.

These bees aremales,so have no stingers. These award-winning bees are a special breed developeda private agricultural foundation for the pollination of plants in greenhouses. There are also food-tasting corners introducing cookiespreserved foods that wereprepared with organic farm products

Eco-Friendly Organic Farming Trade Show
In this, the oldest farming show in Korea, fourteen citiescounties of the nation as well as twenty eco-friendly agricultural organizations including threeGyeonggi Province participated.

During the farm product shows, a wide variety of farm producearound the nation competed. Though oddly shaped, these products are healthier since they were grown without chemical fertilizers. One of the awards went to a medicinal plantGyeonggi Province.

“This herb helps increase immunitycirculation. Its clinical efficacystronger than the natural healing power of our bodies.”
The show, which also attracts a large number of participantsvisitorsoverseas, provided local producers with a valuable opportunity to connect with overseas buyersexpand their market base.
Article 4. Educational Food Safety Musical for Children

In Gyeonggi Province, a musical teamvisiting children to help them develop safe eating habits. Organizedthe provincial HealthWelfare Office, this musical team delivers a message of healthy behavior to young children around the province.

Children at the theater invariably lean forwardare completely absorbed in what the performers are saying. They also interact with the performers.

▶ Musical: ‘Kukuri PrinceGerm Monster”
Since May, this musical team has been on a tour of provincial regions to perform a musical play written specially for young children to help them learn about food safety. Performers in popular character attire tell children what good foods arehow to wash their hands.

Through this performance, featuring familiar characterssongs, children learn how to avoid bad foodseat safely.

After the musical play, children exercise good hand washingare provided with visual education to help them better understand how salty foods can be harmful good foods can make them healthy. Designed to educate children about healthy behavioreating habitstheir perspective, the play will be performed in the thirty-one citiescounties of the province until November.

Article 5. Senior Healthy Cooking Contest (0604)

In order to promote healthy dietary habits among seniors, Gyeonggi Province organized a healthy cooking contest featuring seniors as contestants. Our reporter was there to witness the scene.

Senior Healthy Cooking Contest
The Food Science Hall of the university in which the cooking contesttaking placefilled with mouthwatering smells. Some contestants are busy chopping mushroomsonions, others are mixing meat slices with aromatic seasoning. There are also many male contestants who are showing off their skills with cooking utensils.
This cooking contest aims to help seniors, who often develop a preference for spicy foods, maintain good healthpracticing healthy eating habits. The nineteen two-person teams of contestantsaround the province are the recipients of dietary habit correction training that began in March.

After a fifty-minute cooking time, judges circulate through the hall to measure sodium contentthe digestibility of finished dishes. Unlike other cooking contests, tastepresentation areimportant here. The highest awards went to four teams including the oneAnyang (안양).

"Contestants used to prefer very salty foods. However, they generally exhibited improvement in terms of sodium contentnutrition after the education.”
This dietary habit correction training has been provided to seniors as well as pregnant womenwill continue until September
Article 6. Freshwater Fish Aquarium in Gyeonggi Province (0602)

Our reporter visited a freshwater fish aquarium, the Freshwater Ecology Learning Center, in Yangpyeong (양평) County of Gyeonggi Province. This aquarium showcases a range of freshwater fisharound the world including some endangered species.

The rare species featured at the center include shark-like but very docile freshwater sturgeon, golden mandarin fish?which are one of the natural treasures of Korea?and shiri, an indigenous species thatfound only in the clean upstream environments of mountain creeks. The aquarium now houses more than 1,200 colorful fishsixty-five species. Established in 2003, the aquarium receives approximately 200,000 visitors annuallyis also popular among foreign visitors.

Therealso information about freshwater fish as well as corners for fun activities such as a fishing gamedrawing. Outside the aquariuma promenade traversing a large scenic pond that houses a large number of redwhite carp.

“This center was originally intended to familiarize children with disappearing indigenous freshwater species. Children love this place.”
There are some indigenous freshwater fish species that are on the verge of extinction in Korea. Those species can still be seen at this aquarium whichopen until 5 pm, six days a week except on Mondays
Article 7. Ark Shell Farming Begins in Gyeonggi Province (0605)

The number of ark shells, one of the most popular shellfish in Korea, has been diminishing in recent years. However, it seems a new breed can be introduced for farming on the western coast of Gyeonggi Province.

▶ Tidal Flat on Jebudo Island, Hwaseong
One month ago, baby ark shells of a trial breed were seeded on a tidal flat on Jebu (제부도) Islandthe Gyeonggi MaritimeFisheries Research Institute. Now those little shellfish appear to be growingthriving.

“These are the ark shells that were seeded last month under a trail farming research project. Ark shells are ideal for farming because they grow fasthave high survival rate.”
The Trial Ark Shell Farming Research Project aims to develop a new ark shell breed for commercial farming. The test farming proved successful since the shellfish grew normally with their weight increasingsixty percent.

“Our ark shell farming researcpected to be successful. These shellfish are now expected to help fishermen increase their income.”
The institute will continue checking the growth of the shellfish on a monthly basis.

“Current seawater temperatures provide ideal conditions for the growth of ark shells. With their growth rate as it is, we expect they can be farmed on the western coast successfully.”
With the fisheries production of Korea decreasing due to environmental changes, the development of new farming breeds, such as these ark shells,becoming important.
